After the more structured chaos draft we had during February with Unstable, Conspiracy and Masters boosters, I thought it'd be a good chance to go back to a more traditional sort of chaos draft. It seems that 4 players has become the norm, and well, it's hard to get a bigger group interested in drafting in a more or less regular fashion, so I'll take it anyway. This time the pool consisted of 12 different boosters, most of which were rather new, but with some extra spicy cards:
• Rise of the Eldrazi
• Return to Ravnica
• Theros
• Origins
• Khans of Tarkir
• Fate Reforged
• Dragons of Tarkir
• Battle for Zendikar
• Eldritch Moon
• Amonkhet
• Ixalan
• Iconic Masters
To me this looked interesting enough, especially because of that ROE booster hopefully giving us some big bodies and dumb spells to play with. We took the boosters in a rather random fashion (and I can't recall who opened what for the most part). This time the games felt a lot closer, and three of us ended up on a 2-1 record, with only Seba going 0-3.
Anyway, these are the decks we drafted:
It's not hard to realize that I tend to gravitate towards these three colors, even when my fixing is as poor as it was during this draft. My deck had decent removal and an absolute bomb in Silumgar. I dropped one match against Edu's incredibly slow and defensive deck, but at the end of the day my record was slightly better (because Edu only beat me 1-0 and ran out of time—my deck wasn't the fastest either). I think I got rather lucky with my draws, because my mana was just not great. I wasn't happy to play a Jeskai Banner, but it did get me out of trouble more than once, so that's that. Some of the cards I picked were perhaps not really great, but they did some decent amount of work, like Blessed Reincarnation, which actually got some threats out of the way and exchanged them for smaller dudes, but then there were cards that actually kinda duped me, like Arrogant Broodlord, which looked like a super strong and fast aggro creature, but that was nowhere near as good and didn't work out well in my deck. Also, Heat Ray is really good.
Rob's deck was pretty cool. It drew a whole load of cards and kept fast threats on the board, using a some countermagic to keep things tilted to his favor. His deck was fast enough that he managed to beat Edu's slow ass deck, but perhaps lacked the depth to take on mine. All in all though, it felt pretty balanced and fun.
Now this was something different. A snail-paced, defensive concoction of a deck, Edu managed to build a very unique thing here. Jaddi Offshoot was inconspicuous at first, but it would create such an advantage as both a blocker and a life-gainer that it bought him enough time to drop his big guns, like Eldrazi Devastator or Nemesis of Mortals. It was indeed quite a strong deck, but he ended up losing to Rob's aggro deck (and had he won that match he would've finished 3-0). I'm sure it was a fun deck to play, but it wasn't that much fun to play against it!
Even though this deck went 0-3, I don't think it was really bad. At least during my game against Seba, I got insanely lucky by being able to play Silumgar on curve both games, which pretty much wiped his board and left him absolutely open to my attacks. Maybe it was a mix of bad hands and bad choices, but the deck looked like it could've snagged a game or two, though it could've done with a tighter mana base (more mountains, less swamps tbh).
Having three players go 2-1 meant it was a hard-fought draft and all the decks had their quirks. It was enjoyable and I was surprised by the quality of the decks compared to previous occasions. The ROE pack ended up being rather strong (Vendetta is a hot card!), but the pulls weren't crazy. Guess the best cards we pulled were:
• Overgrown Tomb
• Glacial Fortress
• Ancestral Vision
Two pretty decent pulls and some other meh ones.
